Switzer Picnic Area :: Angeles National Forest

Our last trip to Anza Boreggo in November was one to be remembered, but it was also rough for JW and we haven't been camping since. Instead we've been taking day trips up into the Angles National Forest. The drives have been a great time to talk and discover new places. We leave when JW takes his nap and we drive for a couple of hours looking for a nice spot to spend some time when he wakes. This last trip took us about 30 miles up Angles Crest Highway where stumbled upon Switzer Picnic area, and two weeks later we brought some friends back up with us for a BBQ - it was a cool gray winter day, but still beautiful.

Switzers sits in the upper reaches of the Arroyo Seco river basin in a sylvan setting right along the creek.  The general area is still heavily damaged by the 2009 Station Fire but the bottom of the canyon where, Switzer sits, was untouched by the fire.

Switzer is also a  major trail head into the front range of the San Gabriels. The long Gabrielino trail runs through the picnic grounds and leads in either direction.  Switzer Falls is a 4.5 mile round trip hike out of the southern end of the picnic area. We hope to make it there with JW soon, we don't get very far hiking theses days with him but he sure loves it.
